ROMAC Makes A Difference

Fijian boy Ishraq Ali is in Hutt hospital recovering from skin graft surgery and is chirpy enough to want fried rice.

Ishraq, 9, spent 2 1/2 hours in the operating theatre last Wednesday and is now recovering in intensive care.
He suffered deep burns to his lower back, his left buttock and the backs of both legs in a petrol fire at his home in Fiji.
Rotary Oceanic Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) and Melbourne's Children First Foundation raised about $60,000 to bring him here.
Hutt Hospital plastic surgeon and burns specialist Jim Armstrong said the operation went smoothly. "He's doing fine ... all being well, he won't need any more skin grafts."
Sometimes, a small "patch-up" was needed.
Mr Armstrong said he took a fine layer of skin from the unburnt parts of Ishraq's legs. A "mesher" was used to spread the skin out "like a string vest" over the burns. Though Ishraq had been described as having burns to about 40 per cent of his body,
Mr Armstrong said he needed skin grafts to only 22 per cent.
The body tried to heal by growing skin from the edges of wounds but the grafts were needed because Ishraq's skin could not grow quickly enough to cover the burns completely.

Hutt Hospital would treat 4-5 cases with burns as serious as Ishraq's each year, Mr Armstrong said.
Ishraq, who came to New Zealand with his father Shan, would probably be in hospital for about six weeks. He needed a lot of rehabilitation, including "feeding up".
He was watching television yesterday afternoon, Rotary representative Prabodh Mishra said. "He's looking really good. He's been asking for fried rice."

This weeks speaker is Dr David Morley

David began his training at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in the autumn of 1993. By the summer of 1997, he had achieved a bachelor of science degree and in 1998 qualified with a master of science degree in chiropractic. From July 1998 until early 2003 David worked as an associate chiropractor in England. He ran his own successful chiropractic office for 2 years

before realising a life-long ambition to live, work and play in New Zealand.
"At this time I am striving to achieving a perfect balance between work, play and family life. Corinne and I have been together now for over twenty-two years, we have three children, Ralph aged 11, Elspeth aged 7, and Finlay aged 3 - all of whom receive regular weekly chiropractic care.

President Linton`s Corner

Kia Ora,
Well a small group of Rotarians from our Club , Petone and Upper Hutt braved the soggy conditions on Sunday morning and completed the first of my planned River Trail Walks. Warwick Johnston explained that in 1840 the whole of the Valley was covered by dozen`s of river tributaries and that a major uplift in the 1855 earthquake created the Hutt River that we know today. We walked the boardwalk around the estuary and Robin pointed out recent enhancements on this section of the trail including a wooden walkway under the Pipe Bridge ,new flood control gates and pumps for Black Creek  and a new whitebait breeding lagoon by the Rail Bridge. At the end of our walk the rain stopped ,the sun came out and we enjoyed our tea and biscuits in quiet contemplation looking out to a regenerating Matiu/Somes Island, a yacht race on a sparkling harbour  and sun reflecting off the Wellington CBD in the distance. It doesn`t get much better than that.

DG Tony has asked all of District 9940 Clubs to support  President P K and his Western Hutt Rotary Club with contributions to assist their hosting of 9 year old  Ishraq Ali and his father for the six to eight weeks while he receives medical attention and plastic surgery for his burns at Hutt Hospital. On your behalf I have pledged our Club`s support  by donating our raffle proceeds for the next six weeks to this appeal. This is "making dreams real" for little Ishraq.                                                     Linton.

Finally after the great All Black win we can bring out the Aussie jokes!

Robbie "Dingo" Deans the new coach of the Wallabies takes out his newly selected team for a training session and tells everyone to assume their normal position.
So they all go and stand behind their own goalposts and wait for the conversion.
